From the Archives

Thursday Dec 7, 2017 - Monday Jan 29, 2018

In conjunction with the Miami Street Photography Festival, HistoryMiami Museum will feature an outdoor photography exhibition on the plaza. the photos, taken from HistoryMiami’s archives, are from the Miami News Collection. Founded in 1896 as the Miami Metropolis, the Miami News was Miami’s evening newspaper for many years. In the 1940s, the News began using photographs in the paper and, consequently, began building its photo morgue. The paper systematically kept and organized photographs it considered to be of enduring worth. In 1973, the paper moved to the Miami Herald building. As space was limited, the photographic prints were kept, but almost all the negatives were destroyed. On December 31, 1988, the Miami News ceased publication.

During the 1980s, the Miami News donated many negatives and prints to the Historical Museum of Southern Florida (now HistoryMiami Museum). In 1989, after the Miami News had ceased operations, Cox Enterprises, the Miami News’ parent company, disposed of the paper’s assets. Through the efforts of Miami News editor Howard Kleinberg and publisher David Kraslow, Cox Enterprises gave the historically important materials to the museum.

The Miami News Collection is one of HistoryMiami Museum’s significant photojournalism collections and is a major part of the museum’s image archive, which holds more than 2 million photographs and negatives. This selection features some of the collection’s more compelling and interesting photographs from various decades of the paper’s history.
