The Future of History

Each of us knows that one person, whether family member, friend, or mentor that made history come alive with stories, videos, and photographs. They inspired those around them, especially the young ones, with vivid memories of the past. They were an influencer.
If history is a valued part of your life story, and you want the story to go on, please consider a legacy gift to HistoryMiami Museum. We love history as much as you do. Call Hilda Masip at 305-375-1618 or email hmasip@historymiami.org to talk about gift planning to preserve all our memories.

Professional Background
Graduated with AB degree (Arts & Sciences with emphasis on Communications/Broadcast Journalism) from University of Miami in 1969. Communications Specialist with Burger King Corporation and Florida Power & Light (FPL) for ten years and administrator with Miami-Dade Transit for 30 years. Retired n 2009.
HMM: Tell us about yourself and your family?
Married for 30 years to my wife, Vicki, a pediatric nurse. She passed away over 20 years ago. Most of my professional career was in management with Miami-Dade County. I have two sons, John, a management specialist, and Patrick, a restaurant manager. John’s wife, Deanna, is a counseling supervisor for the Broward County School system. Their children (my grandchildren) are Zachary, a student at University of Central Florida (UCF), and Taylor, a senior high student in Broward County. Since my retirement in 2009, I have been involved, until recently, in mentoring low income students in an after-school program and recording for the visually disabled through the WLRN Radio Reading Service. On a part time basis, I have enjoyed some time involving radio broadcasting of local sports.
HMM: Why did you decide to become a HistoryMiami Museum member?
I decided to become a HistoryMiami Museum member because I have been a Miami resident most of my life and, therefore, have experienced all of the major historical events and I enjoy reliving so many of those historical events featured through the years.
HMM: What are your favorite museum activities?
Some of my favorite museum activities include City Tours with Dr. George and specific timely features such as Bryan Norcross hosting the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew and detailed informative subjects such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Liston, and recalling the McDuffie riots 35 years later.
HMM: How has being a member of HistoryMiami Museum enriched your life?
Being a member of HistoryMiami has given me a much greater appreciation for so many of the significant events of this area where I have lived almost my entire life. Every activity I participate in or read about enriches my understanding of our area’s community lifestyle.
HMM: Do you have a favorite inspirational message or quote that you would like to share with HistoryMiami Museum members?
“Alone, we can do so little; together we can do so much” — Helen Keller
